Census Integrity Project

The National Redistricting Foundation seeks to end gerrymandering by championing a fair and accurate census and transparent redistricting processes across the country.

PROBLEM

The Census – an American institution created in our constitution – is under attack. Accurate census data is essential for the fair distribution of democratic representation and equitable allocation of government resources. Yet the census hinges on trust: no one is counted in the census without trusting the government enough to provide detailed personal information. And mistrust is coming from all sides, taking an acute toll over the past decade. In 2020, there was a tangible undercount of communities of color, children, immigrants, and those living in poverty.

SOLUTION

The Census Integrity Project aims to build trust in and restore the integrity of the 2030 Census by implementing a suite of strategies aimed at accessibility, privacy, and completeness of the count in five short years. The cornerstones of our solution are a coalition of partners, litigation, mapping technology, policy creation, and public education/narrative campaign.

OUTCOMES

Over the next five years, we will build public trust in the census by countering attempts to undermine the 2030 Census – which have already started – and showing our work in a transparent, proactive, coordinated way. All our strategies will recapture confidence in data accessibility and privacy necessary for full-throated grassroots efforts to get out the count among traditionally undercounted communities. The ultimate outcome is a fair and accurate census in 2030, with equal representation and equity in allocation of federal funds.
