NRF Statement on North Carolina Court of Appeals Decision

Washington, D.C.— This is the body…Today, Marina Jenkins, Director of Litigation and Policy for the National Redistricting Foundation (NRF), issued the following statement in response to the North Carolina Court of Appeals’ decision to issue a temporary stay of the candidate-filing period for U.S. House and state legislative elections:

“The North Carolina Court of Appeals recognizes administrative deadlines can and should be moved when districts are egregiously gerrymandered and require further scrutiny. Today’s stay appropriately allows the space for careful consideration of questions critical to our democracy and the rights of North Carolina voters.”

Earlier this morning, NRF-supported voters in the case Harper v. Hall filed a petition with the North Carolina Supreme Court asking the court to strike down the congressional map due to the fact that it is a partisan gerrymander, in violation of the state’s constitution. Plaintiffs in Harper filed the petition with the North Carolina Supreme Court after a three-judge panel of the Wake County Superior Court denied their motion for preliminary injunction on December 2.
