North Carolina Supreme Court Grants NRF-Supported Motion for Preliminary Injunction to Ensure Fair Elections
Washington, D.C. — Today, the North Carolina Supreme Court granted the National Redistricting Foundation-supported motion for a preliminary injunction against the gerrymandered congressional map enacted by the General Assembly last month. The Court suspended the candidate-filing period for congressional and state legislative elections in North Carolina and ordered the trial court to consider the merits of the case filed by NRF-supported voters, Harper v. Hall, and issue a ruling by January 11, 2022.
“The egregiously gerrymandered districts put into place by the North Carolina General Assembly must be struck down once and for all, and today’s decision from the state supreme court lays the path for that to happen,” said Marina Jenkins, Director of Litigation and Policy for the NRF. “Our democracy is premised on free and fair elections. North Carolinians deserve the right to vote for a candidate of their choosing in fair, lawful districts. The Court’s order today appropriately allows the space and time needed to scrutinize the maps and determinatively answer questions critical to our democracy and the rights of North Carolina voters.”
