Washington, D.C. – In the first congressional election in Louisiana since the landmark victory in Allen v. Milligan, voters have elected two Black Members of Congress to represent the state in the sixth and second congressional districts on Louisiana’s Voting Rights Act-compliant map.
“For the first time in almost three decades, Louisiana voters have elected two Black Members of Congress to represent their state—a victory for equal representation. The effect of Louisiana’s fair map demonstrates the absolute necessity of the Voting Rights Act and its continued effectiveness in protecting the right to vote for all Americans,” said Marina Jenkins, Executive Director of the NRF. “This election was not merely about electing candidates—it was a stand for fair representation, voting rights, and justice.”
ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND:
Last year, the Supreme Court issued a landmark decision in Allen v. Milligan to uphold Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, and the National Redistricting Foundation (NRF), the 501(c)(3) affiliate of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), played a central role in that victory. Louisiana’s own VRA-compliant map was enacted following that decision and as a result of two years of litigation initiated by the NRF, challenging Louisiana’s previously gerrymandered map.
