NRF Statement on Start of Special Session to Redraw Louisiana’s Congressional Map

Washington, D.C. —Today, as the Louisiana Legislature began the first day of a special legislative session to redraw the state’s congressional map, Kelly Burton, President of the National Redistricting Foundation, issued the following statement:

“The Louisiana Legislature must fulfill its duty to draw a congressional map that gives Black Louisianians the ability to elect candidates of their choice to Congress, as ordered by the court. In addition to a timely redraw, conducted in good faith, the legislature must also ensure the new districts reflect the months of public input from Louisianians requesting fair representation in Congress. There should be nothing partisan about ensuring good governance, particularly when it affects the representation of the people of Louisiana for the next decade. Louisiana voters, specifically communities of color across the state, deserve a fair congressional map that is the result of a fair and transparent process.”
