NRF Statement on the Conclusion of Oral Argument Before Kansas Supreme Court
Washington, D.C. — Today, the Kansas Supreme Court heard oral argument in Rivera v. Schwab. Plaintiffs in the suit supported by the National Redistricting Foundation (NRF), including Kansas voters and the nonprofit organization Loud Light, have argued that the congressional map enacted by the Kansas Legislature is a partisan gerrymander that also dilutes the votes of Black and Hispanic voters in and around Kansas City, in violation of a number of provisions in the Kansas Constitution.
“With the oral argument complete, the Kansas Supreme Court now has everything it needs to affirm the trial court’s reasoned decision to strike down the state’s gerrymandered congressional map,” said Marina Jenkins, Director of Litigation and Policy for the NRF. “The trial court rightfully found that the Kansas Legislature enacted a congressional map that is an unconstitutional partisan gerrymander that splits apart communities in Kansas, most egregiously diminishing the voting power of communities of color, all in pursuit of undeserved and unchecked political power. We look forward to hearing a final decision from the state supreme court soon.”
