Washington, D.C. —Today, Marina Jenkins, Director of Litigation and Policy for the National Redistricting Foundation (NRF), released the following statement in support of a congressional map submitted by the Elias Law Group, on behalf of their client, James Farkas, to the Virginia Supreme Court for consideration:
“The congressional map put forward by the special masters appointed by the Virginia Supreme Court is highly problematic for a number of reasons, not least of which is that it does not accurately reflect the modern Commonwealth. Virginia is a competitive state – particularly at the congressional level – and increasingly diverse. A fair map in Virginia should keep communities of interest together as much as possible, and should ensure that the will of the people is realized. The Farkas Map does this; the map proposed by the special masters last week does not. The Farkas Map presents a strong alternative congressional map, which would be responsive to, and reflective of, the people of the Commonwealth, and we urge the Court to consider it.”
